General Description

The manure cooling technology is developed for reduction of ammonia emissions from slurry pits in livestock buildings, mainly for pigs on slatted or partly slatted floor. Ammonia emission is an indirect source for N2O and therefore the reducion of ammonia emission will also indirectly reduce the emission of N2O. When the temperature is lowered using manure cooling with heat exhange pumps you will also reduce the direct procuction of N2O and Methane because the low temperature will inhibit the growth of bacteria and the biological degradation of the slurry.

Manure cooling is installed in pig houses with a cooling effect from 10-25 W/m2 depending on the need for reduction of NH3 and CH4 and whether the heat can be used to replace fossile energy use on the farm or not. To document the reduction the farmer need to install meter for monitoring energy consumption. The heeat pump system and surveliance of the system has to be approved by the authorities.

If the manure is cooled with an effect of10W/m2 there will be a reduction of ammonia emission of 8,1 pct. The effect on methane is more uncertain but will be aroud 5-11 kg CO2eq/ton manure depending of the cooling effect in the interval of 10-25 W/m2
